Activities rules
Junior House Reading
-
Each House team must comprise 1 Year 9 boy and 1 Year 10 boy.
-
All students are sent to see Mr Rooke during period 2 and they then draw lots to decide on the running order, before randomly choosing different (yet equally challenging) Prose and Poetry Readings (these will have been prepared in advance by Mr Rooke).
-
Each team will read 1 Poetry and 1 Prose Reading.
-
The teams will then have until the start of period 3 to prepare their Readings (during this time they may be assisted by a ‘coach’ – either a member of staff or a Senior student).
-
At the start of Period 3, all students will go to a selected venue to take part in the competition.
-
The teams will perform their Readings in the order drawn earlier in the day, sitting to watch the others read when they have finished/whilst they wait to read.
-
A panel of judges will then decide upon the final standings after all teams have completed their readings.
-
The whole event should be finished by the end of period 4.
Senior House Public Speaking
-
Each House team must comprise 3 Senior students (from Years 11, 12 or 13).
-
Team members must decide upon their role: ‘Chair’, ‘Main Speaker’, ‘Giver of the Vote of Thanks’.
-
All team members will be sent to see Mr Rooke at the start of period 1. They then draw lots to decide upon the running order, before randomly selecting a previously unknown topic for their speech.
-
I will prepare 8 equally challenging topics for discussion prior to the event.
-
The teams then have until the start of period 5 to prepare their speeches! To help them, they will be given access to an IT room (so that they can research their topic and then type up their speeches) and they may also be helped by a ‘coach’ (member of staff).
-
At the start of period 5, all team members will assemble at a selected venue for the competition.
-
After being introduced by the ‘Chair’, each Main Speaker will speak for a maximum of 5 minutes, with a further 5 minutes (max.) allocated for questions (questions may be asked by both the panel of judges and the audience (which will include the other teams!) and the question/answer session must be managed by the ‘Chair’, a maximum of 3 minutes will then be allocated for the ‘Vote of Thanks’ (the role of the third and final member of the team).
-
If all goes to plan, the competition should be over by about 4pm!
-
A panel of judges will decide upon the final standings.
